I wanted to buy ARK for my friend and then the two of us play co-op. I want to make sure if he puts the tether distance to I know it requires a beefy computer which he does have but I have heard things like, you can't walk into a cave alone or go into the water, Is this true?
Is there any other things like this that I should be aware of? Showing 1 - 12 of 12 comments. Natjur View Profile View Posts. Depends on which map your playing on. When ever you exceed the tether range, or change zones, you will get ported to the host.
Some maps, going into a cave, or water means you are changing zones and will get ported to the host no matter what you have set the tether range to. But then again, most machines that can setup as a Non-Dedicated Server have enough resources to setup a dedicated Server and the Ark client instead and therefore not have this issue.

I've been researching this for a lil while now and I think we will setup a dedicated server then. It is true sadly. Originally posted by Natjur :. Originally posted by 4ndr34 :.
Yeah i'm looking up how to start a dedicated server without steam saying the host is playing ARK. Pretty confusing to me.

That way we can adjust based on our machines performance drop. Because i see no point in being able to limit the m even further. I would like to see it up near or at the least. Someone said at Max settings of 3 I think it was m, I'm trying out entering a value manually and see if it "takes' in the ini file. If it does it'll probably go much further. Am I the only person that has no idea what any of that means? Max setting 3. What's the cons of increasing the distance?
It may require more processing power of the non-dedicaded host? Another bad thing about this is if you die I didn't really mind at first, but it's gotten so old. They need to be able to adjust it more than they have. At least m would be great. Option to set it to infinite would be ideal. I haven't noticed a decrease in performance at all from to m. With the distance where it is now, it's just enough to give you a sense of freedom, before yanking that leash.
I have never played a multiplayer coop game where this was necessary. Why can games like 7 Days to Die allow any player to go anywhere on the map but ARK requires players to be within a certain distance of each other?
Sounds like poor programming to me. But regardless of the reason, it's stupid. I'm playing this for the first time over the free weekend, but this feature alone will dissuade me from purchasing the game. Already killed a few friends while kiting a dinosaur. The tethering has to do with loading the graphics in because of the way the game loads the textures and stuff. Just host a dedicated on your local machine. It's really easy to set up. Minden jog fenntartva.I know this is an older issue but I want to see if anyone had issues with tether distance change while it was briefly available.
My group played at 3. PS4 addition. Whilst the problems may not be obvious, they were definitely serious just subtle. However, we are talking about increasing the tether size. Maybe it's not at all possible or it's way to much and I understand the tether slider is impossible.
But from everything I read on all the tether distance posts and from personal experience I think people would be pretty happy with doubling the existing tether but anything would be very beneficial. The slider isn't impossible. It worked fine unless you turned it up too high then you had issues. Just putting a note saying what is recommended. I've been playing ark with my friend a long time.
The thing came where you could remove the Tether distance almost. But now I can't find it anywhere is it just me or did it get removed? I can deal with that, I cannot deal with m tether distance, and luckily I disabled auto updates for apps on my PS4 before the patch removing the feature hit. If I would have known how limited splitscreen distance was, I would not have purchased the game.
I purchased it solely to be able to play splitscreen with GF, maybe that was my mistake expecting us to be able to explore on our own not be tethered at the hip. With the tether distance slider I can go explore while my GF spends hours gardening We honestly can not go back to having it so low and I would rather be stuck with current state of game before tether sliders removal than not having the option.
If the major issues are just things not rendering at that distance, why not only enable the tether for singleplayer and have a warning come up stating things may not render at extreme distances?
That would honestly placate the majority of the splitscreen complaints, unless again the issues are more serious than things not rendering. Please understand I am only upset about this because it is one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played, especially with splitscreen.
My GF is a huge Jurassic Park fan and this game has brought a ton of joy to us. The tether distance I play on non dedicated with 2 other people and it's never been a big issue. Sure at times one of us might try to go to far but we make it work out because the game is still fun.
I've been playing this game solo hours, on official servers. Nothing the dev's have done have destroyed my gaming experience. Any setbacks are simply dealt with. I see so many complaints about official servers - I never really had much of a problem. Anything that serious is likely bad enough for somebody else to intervene. A strong mental attitude goes far in this game.
Give us a real reason for why tether distance was removed please. Just an example, anything.Home Discussions Workshop Market Broadcasts. Change language. Install Steam. Store Page. So me and my girlfriend have been playing ark Non-Dedicated Server on the island for a while now and ive had my tether distance set to on the island and we were basically able to go on the opposite ends of the map without having an issue but on aberration the tether distance is all wonky like its acting as if we can get too far is there a bug since it just came out?
Showing 1 - 6 of 6 comments. Is that a new mechanic because it never worked for me and everyone said the tether distance was capped at 4 or 5. Astaroth View Profile View Posts. Aberratiion is divided in regions that the game read as big giant caves, and everytime you reach the border of each region you get teleported to the host. Pretty boring. ARK submitted 1 day ago by jpikereddit.I tried tweeting and posting as much as possible to let them know how much this setting meant to some of us but it may have well fallen on deaf ears. I will not lie this single setting was my favorite. My friends are not going to be pleased having to hug my arse the whole time we play I know m8, same here, don't have the foggiest as to why they would remove it if it's for non-dedicated and single player.
Also good to hear from you again. I actually run a YouTube channel now! Though it's mostly warframe. Screw this, not even going to play. My friends and me are all pissed. May as well only way solo. Or not at all. It never caused us any bugs. No one that plays non dedi is happy about it, it's like they didn't even try it out for themselves. But it never caused any problems is the thing. I would set mine to 1, and it would work just fine. They need to add it back or give us rentable servers.
I'm done playing ark after this useless update. They screwed over a lot of people with this last update. They choose what to put in the patch notes and it's always usually positive things. Then as soon as the update goes live they sneakily update them to mention all the bad things or sometimes not even tell us like with the tether distance slider being removed.
I had no problems with tether distance being removed and neither did any of the people who I know who will now not play ark until it's readded or a suitable alternative solution is found A lot of other people reported no issues as well but It's like the Devs didn't even listen to what we told them. Can we do it? Who knows. Do we want to do it? Are we gonna tell you? Who knows". Even playing for hours at different distances between player 1 and player 2. We found that the setting we liked most was 3 times the distance, roughly m.
Please even let us do this as it makes the world of difference. Those on PS4 will soon see this change of tether distance, and I am hoping Wild Card will reconsider. Even a 3x tether would be great. My friend and I play together in my singleplayer world with a 10 setting for tether on PS4, and we have so much more fun not being tied so closely together. We, my son and I play on Xbox split-screen and we have our tether set a x3 which gave us around m - it was nice not to be tied to each other.
I'd be willing to go with just the 3x distance. I use this on PC in my world with another friend, and it is fine. My friend on PS4 just liked having a bit more freedom, so we went up to 10x tether. I had 5 people in my game and as long as they stayed within 3, meters they could still gather resources and I was surprised to see that my game wasn't laggy at all.
Not only this case, in the majority of reports, there is not a single answer from an official source.
